End of Season Wrap-Up: SHCFA Pan-Disability League

The season has ended at Woodburn Road, but plans are underway to expand going into next season.

The season has ended at Woodburn Road, but plans are underway to expand going into next season.

The final round of fixtures was played May 19 at Sheffield Hallam’s City Athletics Stadium, with Aston Swallownest and City Knights Red taking home the 7v7 and 5v5 trophies respectively.

Matches have been played on the last Sunday of each month, organised by our own Julie Callaghan.

She said, “It’s really easy to get involved. As we come to the end of the season, we’ll be looking for expressions of interest. We are expanding the league.”

The new season will have:

  • Two divisions at 5v5
  • Two divisions at 7v7
  • A new under-12 league
  • A new under-14 league

Steve, team coach, encouraged any newcomers who might be apprehensive to not be nervous.

“Just enjoy yourself. If you want to come and play football, if you’ve got a disability, this is the place for you.

“It’s brilliant. Everyone looks after each other.”

Organisers are aware it’s not the only disability league in South Yorkshire, and work with South Yorkshire Ability Counts League to make sure everyone can be involved.

Brian, 5v5 referee, described it as a fantastic event, “It’s well organised, but it’s the players who make it.”
