Brand new girls’ under-7s football league launching next season
From next season, girls aged six in Sheffield and surrounding areas will be able to play team football for the first time thanks to a new division being launched by the Sheffield and Hallamshire Women and Girls League in partnership with the County FA.
This brand-new under-sevens league is yet another expansion of girls’ football in our region and follows on from the success of the under-eights division that was started in 2021.
Julie Higgins, secretary at SHWGL said: “This is an exciting time for the Sheffield and Hallamshire Women and Girls League and will bring us in line with youth football throughout the area. We hope to capitalise on the success of the Women's Euro's and the upcoming Women’s World Cup by encouraging more girls into sport.”
Ahead of the start of the 2023/24 season, clubs are invited to a pre-season girls’ football festival hosted by Sheffield and Hallamshire County FA.
The festival will be held on Sunday 16th July at Kiveton Park Football Club between 10am-2.30pm and aims to provide girls with a positive introduction into the game ahead of their first season of football. It will focus on playing in a team format and rules of the game, with female qualified referees who will be on hand to support the players. All girls will receive a medal for taking part.
It also provides an opportunity for clubs and team managers to speak to county FA staff and committee members from the Sheffield and Hallamshire Women and Girls League who will outline the expectations of the new division.
Teams must be affiliated with a County FA and intend on registering to the SHWGL for the 2023/2024 season to enter the festival.
Address: Kiveton Park Football Club, Storth Lane, Kiveton Park, Sheffield S26 5QQ
