Claim The Game

Will you Claim the Game?

New pilot programme launched to encourage more women to get involved in recreational football

We are currently running a Claim the Game pilot programme to help clubs and organisations create more recreational football sessions for women in our region.

Initially set up to run alongside Weetabix Wildcats sessions, the programme has enabled clubs and organsations to host football sessions for mums and carers while their child takes part in a simultaneous football session.

But the initiative is no longer just for football mums and carers. It is for women of all ages, abilities and fitness levels that might have never had the chance to play football before due to a lack of opportunities or other barriers.

A Claim the Game session covers all versions of the beautiful game and can be anything from a walking football session to a gym class incorporating a football, or a relaxed kickabout to a small sided match.

Claim The Game

Women’s Recreational Football Officer at the Sheffield & Hallamshire County FA, Sara Harnett, is encouraging women who have never played football before to try their local session.

Sara said: “A Claim the Game session doesn’t have to be to be two teams, kitted out, going up against each other in a competitive manner. The sessions can be Soccercise based, walking football, a kickabout or just fun games. There can be coffee (or other tipples) afterwards and they are a great way to make women feel truly welcomed into the game by giving them the confidence to play and learn.”

So whether it’s been months or years since you last played, or you’ve never kicked a ball before, there are opportunities to get involved in football with current sessions already taking place across our county.
