Coach Support Evening

Coach Support Evening

Creating the right environment for young players

Over 30 coaches from the Sheffield and Hallamshire Women & Girls League attended a coach support evening at St George's Park Westfield on Wednesday 17th November.

The CPD event, which focused on creating the right environment for young players, used a combination of practical coaching, evaluation and theoretical learning.

The practical showcased a coaching session using Sheffield United Community Foundation LFC U8s & U9s. The session analysed dribbling and staying on the ball techniques (the session plan is available below).

Following the practical, the coaches headed indoors to complete a 45-minute workshop where they reviewed the practical, analysing how the coach created the right environment for the players.

The workshop focused on three key areas:

  • How to measure success
  • How to manage mistakes
  • Identifying the coach behaviours from the practical that support the creation of a positive environment.

Tom Measham, Club Support Officer at Sheffield and Hallamshire County FA, was delighted to hear from so many coaches, who all echoed that player enjoyment is the main measure of success.

Tom said: “The coach support evenings are a great example of a league supporting and developing its coaching volunteer workforce. It was particularly pleasing for me to hear so many coaches state that they measure success by the number of players smiling and enjoying the game, which results in players coming back week after week.

“It’s crucial that all coaches within the game can recognise what a good environment looks and sounds like, ensuring that their players get to experience this every time they play and train.

“With clubs, leagues and coaches constantly striving to improve the experience for young players in our region, we can all create an environment for young players to really thrive in. I am certain that every coach that attended the session has taken away something positive that they can then introduce into their own coaching.”

The County FA would like to place on record our thanks to the Sheffield and Hallamshire Women & Girls League for their collaboration and support to deliver this session, and the Sheffield United Community Foundation LFC for supporting with the practical demonstration.
