Frickley Athletic Youth Team Scholarship Trial

First trial will take place on Friday 24th March 2017 (6pm – 9 pm)

Frickley Athletic and Minsthorpe Community College are announcing a new partnership that will see Frickley start their own full time Youth Team for talented 16 to 18-year-olds hoping to pursue a career in the world of professional football and who want to receive a high quality education at the same time.

The Football Scholarship has been set up to help promising young footballers reach their full potential in the game, whilst also ensuring they attain a range of academic and practical qualifications as part of a unique sporting and academic package offered by the two organisations.

Successful players will be given a two-year scholarship with Frickley Athletic and will combine a programme of A-level and BTEC courses of their choice with a minimum 10 hours football coaching per week. This is a unique aspect of the Frickley Scholarship as scholars have a variety of qualifications they can choose to study at Minsthorpe and are not limited to just one qualification as they might be on other similar schemes. This will enable them to meet their full academic potential at the same time as working towards their possible future footballing career. Scholars will also have the opportunity to play at the highest level. Frickley are aiming to compete in the National League Under 19 Alliance and Cup Competitions as well as in the prestigious FA Youth Cup. All home fixtures will be played at Frickley’s Westfield Lane stadium.

The Frickley Athletic Youth Team are looking to recruit talented players in the current under 16/17/18s age group (current Year 11, 12 and 13 who will travel into Minsthorpe each day for training and education.

This is a full time education and football programme; it offers scholars a unique two-year course where they will train in a full time professional football environment on a daily basis and receive UEFA B qualified coaching. Scholars will also be given the opportunity to excel in the classroom at Minsthorpe Community College and to be able to fully participate in both the academic and enrichment opportunities offered by the College. Scholars will be supported to make strides towards the Frickley first team and into professional football through their extensive scouting contacts who frequently visit games, or even continue into higher education at university.

Minsthorpe Community College offers an education programme including BTEC Sport qualifications, a range of A-Level subjects and GCSE Maths & English re-takes. In addition to this, scholars will have access to careers advice, daily tutoring, and full pastoral support from a dedicated head of year as well as sports leadership opportunities within the school setting where they will regularly work with PE staff. The college also has an outstanding range of facilities that are available to the scholars, such as a 3G football pitch and a state of the art fitness suite, where players will receive strength and condition sessions delivered by qualified instructors.

This is a great opportunity for those undiscovered players – or those who have been released by a professional club but still have an aspiration to progress their football career – or, perhaps, ‘the unpolished diamond’ that has slipped through the net who just needs the right nurturing environment in order to develop. This partnership aims to develop both scholastic and sporting potential by recruiting from the best available talent right across Yorkshire.

Successful players will be invited to take part in a further training session and play against Frickley’s current first team on Friday 31st March.
