Being a top quality referee isn’t just about making the right decisions on the pitch.

You need to make the right decisions off it too.

Officials need to be able be able to keep up with the pace of the game, which can last for up to 120 minutes – and that’s not including penalties.

Progression up the refereeing ladder often means that the intensity and importance of the game increases and greater levels of physical and mental fitness are required.

The FA have put together a Referees Fitness Guide which is full of hints and tips on how to develop and maintain match fitness, including stretches, warm-ups and exercises.

Sheffield & Hallamshire FA run fitness sessions throughout the season, contact Referees Development Officer Craig Grundy at craig.grundy@sheffieldfa.com or telephone 0114 261 5500 for more information.
