Passing Of Former President Maurice Matthews

All at the Sheffield & Hallamshire County FA were deeply saddened to hear of the recent passing of our former President Maurice Matthews.

Maurice was appointed to the Council of the Association in 1972 as the representative from the Sheffield and District Referees Association and he became an elected member in 1973.  In his playing days Maurice was a player with Ravens F.C. in the South Yorkshire Amateur Football League. He was a registered referee from 1961 to 1972 and he achieved the status of Assistant Referee on the Football League.  Maurice was the County F.A. Representative on the main F.A. Council for eight years and served as Vice-Chairman of the F.A. Referees Committee.  In May 1978 Maurice became Chairman of the Sheffield and District Referees Association and in 1981 became President of that Association.

Maurice was appointed Chairman of the Sheffield & Hallamshire County F.A. in 1987 and became President in 2009. In 2018 Maurice received a special award from the County FA at the Council and Awards dinner. He is remembered fondly by his colleagues for his support and significant contribution to football across the region for more than 50 years.
